More than 800 political prisoners in Bahrain are entering their fourth week of hunger strike, and for the first time in a long time, the government seems helpless and placed in a narrow corner, facing media and political pressure without its ability to maneuver.

The Bahraini National Initiative against Normalization with the Zionist Enemy, which comprises 25 Bahraini organizations, stressed that the visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen to Bahrain with a trade delegation is "a desperate attempt to normalize in the economic fields."

The director of Jaw Central Prison, Hisham Al-Zayani, ordered police at the prison to handcuff detainees on hunger strike from behind while transferring them to the infirmary, according to the director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), Ahmed Al-Wadaei.

The Jaw Prison administration told the AFP that "all inmates have the right to non-violent protest," claiming that "additional care and advice have been afforded to them."

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that Iran gives much importance to its relations with Bahrain and that messages are being exchanged between the two countries and indirect negotiations are currently underway.

The Wall Street Journal stated that political prisoner in Jaw Prison Ahmed Jaafar, who is on hunger strike, was verbally and physically abused by officers and police in prison and transferred to solitary confinement.

The number of political detainees in Jaw Central Prison on hunger strike on their 20th day has increased to 804, according to Ahmed Al-Wadaei, director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD).

Bahraini activists in diaspora announced that they go on a hunger strike on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, "in solidarity, support and advocacy for the oppressed political prisoners on hunger strike in Bahrain's prisons."
