Bahrain Mirror: The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expressed its concern about the continued suffering of prisoners in Bahrain, including prisoner Ayoub Adel Ahmed, whose health deteriorated as a result of the Jaw Central Prison administration's neglect of his treatment.

The center confirmed, in a statement, that it had received a direct statement from Ayoub Adel Ahmed (31 years old) stating that he had been subjected to negligence in obtaining the necessary health care by the prison administration.

The center explained that "the prison administration was late in responding to Ayoub's request to transfer him to the hospital recently, after he confirmed to them that he had urinated blood, had severe abdominal pain, and other health symptoms," pointing out that, "After two days of continuous request from Ayoub to the prison administration to transfer him to the hospital, it transferred him on the third day, where he was admitted to intensive care upon his arrival for 21 days due to the delay in providing health care to him, and he was at risk of suffering from kidney failure and other diseases, according to the diagnosis of the treating physician."

Ayoub stated that "prison officials did not inform his family about him being in the intensive care, although his family checked with the prison administration several times," stressing that the latter "did not allow him to file a complaint about his delay in receiving treatment and health care."

The center reminded the Bahraini authorities that "health care is a right guaranteed by international laws," and warned them that "violating this right violates the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners or the "Nelson Mandela Rules," which affirm that prisoners who require specialized treatment shall be transferred to specialized institutions or civilian hospitals." It pointed out that "international human rights mechanisms confirm that imposing restrictions on elderly or sick prisoners is considered ill-treatment."

BCHR called on the Bahraini authorities to "release Ayoub Adnan and all sick detainees to ensure that they receive the necessary health care," and also called on "the official supervisory bodies to carry out their duties, investigate cases of medical negligence, and hold those who are negligent accountable."
