Minority Shia Living Worst Periods in Saudi Arabia: 122 Shiites Killed in Era of Salman and his Son
Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): When the Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz assumed power on January 23, 2015, the Shiite minority living in the eastern region of the country didn't know that this era would be the worst they have ever experienced.
Four months after taking office, the terrorist ISIS group launched (May 23, 2015) a suicide attack on the Imam Ali (pbuh) mosque in the town of Qudaih, Al-Qatif, killing 22 worshippers and injuring 102.
At that time, social media outlets were flooded with condemnations and the then Saudi Crown Prince (Mohammed bin Nayef), who also headed the Interior Ministry, visited the relatives of the martyrs to condole them, and listened to them speak about the need to put a stop to the language of atonement and hatred, which has turned into a weapon that targets and kills the Shiite sect.
Shiites expected the authorities to make political reforms and breakthroughs, with the significant campaign of sympathy that accompanied the bombing incident, but they were surprised to see the contrary.
The authorities have pursued those involved in the bombing from ISIS for only main one reason: they that is the authorities are the only ones who have the right to kill Shiites, and indeed the months following the bombing (and other bombings), have shown that the state is executing a new plan aimed at crushing the Shiite minority, and revealed that this plan will be bloody and harsh.
A year after taking office, the Saudi king ratified the execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqer Al-Nimr, launching a new era of brutal repression against Shiites in the kingdom.
From January 2016 to March 2022, the authorities killed 122 Shiites and 3 Asian nationals living in Qatif, with 83 executions and 34 live bullet killings, either during raids or indiscriminate shootings at Al-Mousawarah which the authorities forcibly demolished. Additionally, 8 human rights activists were killed in prison, either as a result of torture or medical negligence.
