Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): The Citizen Lab revealed in its report the identities of the two Bahraini activists who were targeted and their phones were hacked by the Israeli NSO Pegasus spyware. The two activists are Moosa Abd-Ali and Yusuf Al-Jamiri, both live in exile.
Moosa Abd-Ali's iPhone 8 appears to have been hacked with Pegasus at some point prior to September 2020.
According to the report, Abd-Ali sued FinFisher, another spyware company, for supplying the Bahraini government with spyware that was used to hack his personal computer in 2011.
The spying against Moosa's computer was first revealed in data leaked from FinFisher.
Yusuf Al-Jamri's iPhone 7 appears to have been hacked with Pegasus at some point prior to September 2019. The team that prepared the report said that it was unable to determine whether he was hacked while in Bahrain or London.
Al-Jamri was granted asylum by the UK Home Office in 2018, based on his reports that he was tortured in 2017 while in the custody of Bahrain's main intelligence agency, the National Security Apparatus. Bahrains National Security Apparatus (NSA) is infamous for torturing to death journalist Karim Fakhrawi in 2011.
The report noted that further forensic analysis may be able to establish a more precise date of the hacking of Abd-Ali and Al-Jamri's phones.
